The Acidic Environment > 2. Acidic Oxides >
Analyse information from secondary sources to summarise the industrial origins of sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen and evaluate reasons for concern about their release into the environment
- There are several industrial sources of sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen (follow link for more information).
- There are several reasons for concern about the release of these gases:
- Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide irritate the human respiratory system.
- Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas.
- Nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) can lead to photochemical smog.
- They are all acidic oxides and therefore can contribute to acid rain, which produces many problems (follow link for more information).
