Identify that the enzymes of glycolysis are found in the cell cytoplasm and that glucose is the raw material for glycolysis
- Glycolysis is the first step of cellular respiration and does not require oxygen to occur. This makes it an anaerobic process.
- Glycolysis takes place in the cytosol (part of the cytoplasm) and yields a small amount of ATP, as well as pyruvate.
- Enzymes play the role of catalysts in these reactions that break down the glucose molecule into two pyruvate molecules.
- The complete oxidation of glucose can yield as many as 36 ATP.
