Oxides and the Periodic Table

The Acidic Environment‎ > ‎2. Acidic Oxides‎ >

Analyse the position of these non-metals in the Periodic Table and outline the relationship between position of elements in the Periodic Table and acidity/basicity of oxides

  • The basic trend in oxide acidity across the rows of the periodic table is:
Basic → Amphoteric → Acidic
  • The basic trend in oxide activity down the period groups of the periodic table is:
Acidic → Amphoteric → Basic.
  • Non-metals are found mostly in the top-right corner of the periodic table, and thus have acidic oxides.
