Sources of Acidic Oxides and Concerns

The Acidic Environment‎ > ‎2. Acidic Oxides‎ >

Analyse information from secondary sources to summarise the industrial origins of sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen and evaluate reasons for concern about their release into the environment

  • There are several industrial sources of sulfur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen (follow link for more information).
  • There are several reasons for concern about the release of these gases:
    • Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide irritate the human respiratory system.
    • Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas.
    • Nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) can lead to photochemical smog.
    • They are all acidic oxides and therefore can contribute to acid rain, which produces many problems (follow link for more information).
